North vs South, which is the most scenic island? This is the question we hoped to answer on our 2020 New Zealand adventure. That was until COVID-19 hijacked our holiday and we had to abandon the majority of our South Island itinerary; instead spending over 2 weeks of lockdown in idyllic MacKenzie country, part of the South Canterbury region. We did however experience a wonderful 15 days on the beautiful North Island.
So, what next? I guess we will have to reschedule our South Island tour and then decide; although one thing is already clear - there is a striking contrast between the two islands. There are however some pleasing similarities - spectacular scenery (lakes, coastlines and mountains), amazing wildlife, outdoor activities aplenty, compelling history, fabulous food and really friendly people who appreciate their land, flora and fauna.
For us the true test of how interesting and memorable a country is, is whether you leave wanting more or if you feel like "been there, done that, tick it off the list". Regardless of COVID-19 disruption, within days of arriving in New Zealand it was abundantly clear that this country hooks you and draws you back time and time again. We can't wait to return.
We will explore some of the highlights of the trip in further posts (coming soon).
